LOCKERROOM founder Monique Robinson works predominantly in ceramic, with craftsmanship that also includes sculpture, photography and poetry.
With an Honours degree of Interior Architecture from the University of New South Wales, MR developed an interest in tactility and so LOCKERROOM was established to enable continuous exploration in these practices.
This practice often draws upon geological, geographical and architectural influence. A focus within the work is the emphasis on hand-made, that of mark-making and impressions, that often signify a moment in time or an artefact unique unto itself that cannot be remade. Less a tool of function and more so, of motion and of time. Fostering the notion of presence, with a strong connection to, or reflection of, the truth of the earth and my lived world.
An intertwining of philosophical reasoning and material exploration. To dig for clay from the mountains and river systems, experimenting with surfaces comprised of the mudstones that wash down stream each time the river floods and ash remnants from the trees and the fires had in the cool winter. Often finished with flame and the milieu of a Wood Kiln.
I acknowledge the Gumbaynggirr people as the first inhabitants and traditional custodians of the land on which I live and practice. I recognise the continuing connection to land, sea, culture and community. I pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
Work is made in Boambee, Australia & when away, wherever the artist is.
